First lesson when it comes to shading with charcoal is to train your eyes for understanding tones - Shadows, Highlight, Midtone. Unlike Pencil which is solid and precise, Charcoal, on the other hand, it's daring, bold and dramatic, also much darker than any pencil. It's a smearing medium so make sure gentle blending it and avoid touching the surface of the paper. It is also a good idea to select paper with a grainy texture not a smooth paper, because it will not be able to hold the carbon dust. Thanks God.
